Children’s Book Seen Named Finalist in the 2025 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards
Powerful Story Celebrating Inclusion and Disability Awareness Receives National Recognition
Orange County, CA – April 3, 2025 — Seen, a heartfelt picture book by award-winning author C.M. Harris and illustrated by Ratu Megawangi, has been named a finalist in the 37th annual IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards, one of the highest national honors for independent publishing. The book is a finalist in the category of Disabled Communities, recognizing works that bring attention, visibility, and understanding to people living with disabilities.
Published by Purple Diamond Press, Seen tells the story of Ariana, a young girl with a disability that is never labeled, allowing readers to focus on her experience rather than her diagnosis. Through a simple yet powerful narrative, Seen emphasizes friendship, kindness, and the idea that children with differences don’t owe the world an explanation — they deserve to be seen and accepted exactly as they are.
“Writing Seen was deeply personal for me,” says Harris, who lives with a neuromuscular disability. “This book is for every child who’s ever felt left out, misunderstood, or overlooked. I wanted to show that true friendship sees beyond differences, and that inclusion should be the norm — not the exception.”
Seen was featured during a special family reading event at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, earlier this year. Surrounded by young readers and families, Harris shared Ariana’s journey, sparking meaningful conversations about empathy and inclusion. The event was part of the museum’s commitment to celebrating diverse voices and fostering community through literature and art.

The book has resonated with educators, parents, and students. School districts use it during social-emotional learning lessons and read aloud to teach empathy, compassion, and acceptance. With bright, expressive illustrations by Ratu Megawangi and an empowering message, Seen opens the door for meaningful conversations about disability, identity, and friendship.
The IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold and Silver Awards winners will be announced on May 16, 2025, at a special ceremony during the IBPA Publishing University in St. Paul, Minnesota.
